WATTERMAN SKIPS TO LAKEVILLE CROWN

By M.D. Swanger
Lakeville Ohio July 2,1999

The first jewel of Lakeville Speedway's Triple Crown for the late models was witnessed by a full house of fans as 35 top notch cars and drivers signed in for the Jones Oil - Turbo Blue 40 lap, $4,000 to win feature. Shane McLoughlin started on the pole but Dean Alexander out-gunned him into turn one and set the pace for the opening 8 circuits. Sixth starting Skip Watterman of Columbus was on Alexander's tail for two laps before he was able to get by going down the back stretch and take command. Driving the Bobby Kitchens Race Car Fabrications, B & K Remodelers, and Tecumseh Inn #13, Watterman extended his lead to a full straight-away lead until the races only caution came out on lap 22 for Tim Penley's spin. On the restart, Watterman was able to pull back out to a comfortable lead as Ryan Markham was battling his way into second as he worked on Mcloughlin for third and then dueled with Alexander for second as he secured the runner-up spot on lap 26. All during this time, Keith Berner and Matt Miller moved past McLoughlin to place theirselves into the top five. In the closing laps, Markham was moving in on Watterman but the straight-away lead that he had built up was more than Markham could handle as Alexander held off Berner for third with Miller taking fifth. Making the biggest move of the night was J.R. Gentry as the second generation rookie driver in the late models started 16th and crossed the finish line in eighth. McLoughlin, Markham, Berner, and Watterman were the class of the heat races and Blaine Aber held off Jim Cushing for the Last Chance win.
Kristin Uhler led the first 4 laps of the Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'B' feature but a yellow flag for John Gerhart closed the field up and on the restart, Ashland's Scott Clantz blew by Uhler and breezed into Budweiser victory circle for the second time this year in his Club 42 sponsored #07c. Points leader Charlie Van Sickle finished third ahead of last weeks winner, Jack Swartz and Tom Keller. Heat winners were Keller, Uhler, and Clantz.
Gary Hensel Sr. padded his point lead in the Rick Moore Motors Cruiser feature as the Wooster driver started his Mike's Custom Exhaust #c4 in eighth and charged into the lead at the end of the second lap. Hensel built up such a big lead that second place finisher Chet Fry pulled into victory circle thinking he had won, not realizing that Hensel was ahead of him. Craig Fry, Ed Brenneman, and Dustin Shank rounded out the top five. Russ Norris, Hensel Sr., and Brenneman posted the heat wins.
The second jewel of the Triple Crown for the Late Models will be on Friday, July 23rd as the winner of that 50 lap feature will pocket $5, 000.
A regular show of the American Payroll Advance Late Models, Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'A' and 'B' divisions and the Rick Moore Motors Cruisers is on the card for this Friday, July 9 with race time at 7:30 p.m.  Coming soon will be the 4 cylinder cruisers at Lakeville Speedway.
