INTERSTATE 79 SPEEDWAY    7-2-99
        by Dixie Phillips

Santa Watches Dalton Win #5

Interstate 79 Speedway played host to none other than "Santa Claus' on
Friday evening, July 2, as Christmas in July was celebrated.  Santa gave
gifts to all the children and paced the feature events in the pace truck
which was decked out in lights and carrying a Christmas tree.  Feature
winners for the evening were Nolan Dalton, Sonny Conley, Shawn Davis,
Jeff Kesling, and Sonny Crayton.

Not that any win is ever easy, but at least Nolan Dalton didn't have to
come from the tail of the Shinnston Plumbing late model field as he has
done in the past few weeks.  Dalton started fifth and took 16 laps to
take the lead away from Robbie Scott who held the point from the green.
After the pass was made, Dalton didn't hesitate to take his fifth win of
the season with Scott, Butch McGill, Mike Benedum, and Doug Horton
following at the line.  Heat race winners were Scott, Gary Dalton, and
McGill.

Sonny Conley won back to back features in the month of May but had been
absent for a few weeks.  Friday night, he returned and took home number
3 for the year in the semi late class.  Duane Moreland, Rick Burrows,
Scott Chenoweth, and Tim Senic rounded out the top five.  Conley and
Moreland took the heats.

The UMP modified feature went right down to the wire as Shawn Davis and
Vic Vandergrift swapped the lead lap after lap battling for the top
spot.  Both drivers tried the high and low sides and no one knew until
they crossed the line who the winner would be.  Davis edged Vandergrift
for his second win of the season.  Brent Trimble and Ron Parrish were a
photo finish for third with Trimble getting the spot by a nose.  Dave
Defibaugh was fifth.  Heat races went to Greg Wilt, Davis, and Jason
Ammons.

Picking up his third pure stock victory of the year  was Jeff Kesling
as he held off Gary Britton who had his best run ever.  Paul Watson, Pat
Frazier, and Ron Howard completed the top five.  Heat winners were
Kesling, Watson, and Steve Frazier.

There have been ten 4 cylinder features in '99 and only two different
drivers have scored wins.  Friday night, there was a new face in victory
lane when Sonny Crayton started first and finished first.  The remaining
top five were Jeff Pennington, Mike Simpson, Willie Robinson, and D. Jay
Miller.  Crayton and Pennington won the heats.

Next weekend will be a double header at I-79 with regular racing in
five division sponsored by Automotive Color Technology.  The monthly
appearance of the Dwarf Cars will also be on tap.  Then on Sunday, July
11, the Enduro, which was rained out on June 27, will be run.  Over 80
cars were ready to take the green flag when rains hit the speedway.
This is an event you don't want to miss!
